ModDB announces new indie digital distribution platform

This week is absolutely rife with indie news, and this little bit is really drool-worthy, believe me. Until now, indie games that have any chance of making it in the main stream have to be featured on Steam, Impulse, or some other digital distribution platform for gamers to indulge. Generally speaking it’s been a sweet deal for indies, the only problem is being unable to control content.

ModDB.com hopes to remedy this problem by introducing Desura, the first digital distribution platform designed solely for indie games and the gamers who love them. Right now it’s unclear if Desura will feature a client like Steam or Impulse, or if it will be a website only ordeal like Direct2Drive, but I think it’s safe to say indie gamers and their developers should be pretty excited.

Why you ask? Hit the jump for more features and why you should be as excited about Desura as I am.

Desura is planned as a late April release and touts the ability to give indie developers complete control over their content. When you visit any digital distribution store, be it Steam or Direct2Drive, you’re presented with a trailer, some screenshots, and the option to buy it now. Desura is breaking this mold by allowing indie developers to create their own pages with their own content.

In addition, members of the gaming community can add their own screenshots and reviews for the game, so you get a developer driven page with user content. It’s unclear if developers will be able to completely delete negative reviews of content, so that aspect of the new service does raise some concern in my eyes.

Aside from just a store front, Desura is an indie gaming community. It has forums and a community for gamers to interact with one another, thus it seems as if the platform could be a serious threat to Steam’s indie games catalog. Of course, nothing can compare to achievements for those among us who love gobbling them down, but having all your indie games in one collection with the ability to connect with other indie gamers is something to get excited about.

It will be interesting to see how this service develops over the next few months. What do you think? Will you use it, or is it another distribution platform in an already crowded market?

Mass Effect 2 Gets a New Weapon

Icon 11 hours ago Views: 4 - No Comments
Those with access to the Cerberus Network (free when purchasing Mass Effect 2 new) can now download a new weapon for free. The Arc Projector is a new heavy weapon that requires two seconds to charge up, at which point it ionizes enemies with an invisible laser before nailing them with a "lightning-lik bolt." The description adds that those with good aim can arc shots to take out explosives at the same time.

Check out these latest screenshots of the Arc Projector in action. Then go snag it.

Even More Portal 2 Details Surface

Not sure if this is old news, but here it is anyway.

Portal 2's existence was only just recently confirmed a few days ago, but details out of Game Informer's cover story continue to make their way online. Now the entire cover story itself has evidently been scanned, and VG247 pulled a few of the major details.

Portal 2 will, reportedly, take place hundreds of years after the first Portal (pictured), resulting in the Aperture Science labs looking like "a jungle." Despite this significant time shift, Portal 2 will still somehow once again star Chell, the first game's protagonist, as the playable character in the single-player game. GlaDOS returns as well, with the (Portal 1 spoiler warning) personality cores you seemingly destroyed at the end of the first game having taken over different areas of the lab.

Meanwhile, as previously revealed, the co-op campaign will be a stand-alone story...that apparently stars two bi-pedal robots. Gameplay-wise, physics will play a bigger role in the puzzles, with one example being using a portal to suck air from a vent in one area into another. There will also be "reflection cubes" that'll be used for laser-redirection puzzles. Game Informer's cover story also confirms that Portal 2 will indeed be a full-fledged game, with Valve comparatively calling Portal 1 a "test bed."

And while we also already knew Portal 2 is scheduled for release this fall for the Xbox 360 and PC, the story also says the game will be released on Mac.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is new king of UK sales charts

It's debatable whether or not the server crashing this past week was a symptom of Battlefield: Bad Company 2's success. What isn't debatable is the game's explosive debut on the UK's Chart-Track all-formats chart. The multiplayer-centric shooter, which we've been thoroughly enjoying, outsold the original Bad Company's launch week numbers almost 3 to 1. According to Chart-Track, BC2 is the "best ever launch for any game released this early in the year." Interestingly, 53 percent of BC2 sales went to the Xbox 360 version, followed by 31 percent and 16 percent of sales for the PS3 and PC, respectively. (The game also topped the three, individual platform charts.)

Of course, lurking in the corner was Just Dance. The game will not go away and continues to stay in the top three week after week after week. Last week's top game, Heavy Rain, slipped down to fourth and the battle of Aliens vs. Predator held onto third. Check out the complete top ten after the break.
